Does the Wedding Party Have to Get Gifts for the Bride and Groom?

Whether you are a bridesmaid or groomsman, a lot of obligations come with being part of the wedding party-meaning, you'll be giving a lot of your time (and spending a lot of your money) as the big day approaches. After chipping in for the engagement party, ponying up for the bachelor or bachelorette getaways, and putting down deposits for the perfect bridal shower-not to mention your emotional support and DIY assistance-do you have to also put down your credit card for a wedding gift? Here are the gifting basics every wedding party member needs to know.

While we wish we could tell you that your presence is present enough, unfortunately, all that pre-wedding spending (and your incredible friendship, of course) does not relieve you from wedding gift duties. However, we've got a few tricks and tips that will help ease the burden.

Instead of shelling out the big bucks for a gift at every event, do some serious budgeting before you accept your wedding party role. Figure out how much your participation will cost, and decide exactly what you'll be able to afford when it comes to gifts. Then, split your gift funds up among the events where a gift should be brought (most likely the engagement party, bridal shower, and the wedding itself). Set aside 40-50% of your funds for the wedding gift, then split what's left in half, giving yourself a firm budget for each present so you're not left with a totally empty bank account.

Another way to stretch those dollars? A group gift! Team up with other bridesmaids or groomsmen and pick a more extravagant gift that's totally affordable when it's split between all of you. Shop early so you can be the ones to snag that gift your BFF really wants, like the totally gorgeous wine glasses or the pricey pots and pans that would be way out of your price range otherwise.

And of course, you can keep those pre-wedding gifts on the affordable side by opting for a nice gesture that's not a huge investment. Bringing a bottle of wine or champagne and a note to the engagement party screams “Let's Celebrate!” without all of the dollar signs. And there's no need to splurge on La Perla for your bestie's lingerie shower when brands like Aerie make the comfiest bralettes in soft, pretty lace. After all, it's the thought that counts!
