Even before Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's royal baby made his entrance into the world on May 6, he was already one of the most famous children in the world. Baby Sussex-whose name we hope to hear soon-is seventh in line to the British throne, behind his grandfather Prince Charles; his uncle Prince William; cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis; and his own father.
And his parents are two of the most photographed people in the world-which is probably why they've worked hard to keep the details of their son's arrival as private as possible. But the kid is already a social media star, whether they like it or not.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to announce the birth on Instagram, a break from modern royal tradition, and now the kiddo already is breaking records. According to Hello! Magazine, the "It's a Boy!" post from his mom and dad reached one million likes in less than an hour, which isn't shocking given how anxiously the world was awaiting the happy news. It has now amassed over 2.7 million likes (and counting) making it the most-liked post on an official royal account in history.
"We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses' son weighs 7lbs. 3oz." the post's caption read. "The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives. More details will be shared in the forthcoming days."
The couple also shared a clip of Prince Harry's sweet press update outside their home in Windsor, where he beamed with pride over his wife and newborn son. It also has over one million likes.
This isn't the first social media milestone that the @SussexRoyal account has reached. After the Sussexes launched their own Instagram in April, separate from Kate Middleton and Prince William, they set a Guinness World Record by reaching one million followers in the shortest amount of time: five hours and 45 minutes.
None of this is incredibly surprising when you consider that the duchess was quite the Instagram influencer before marrying into the royal family. Remember her lifestyle blog, the Tig? But it's still pretty cool to watch the royal family embrace the social media age. Here's hoping @BabySussex has good selfie game.
