After sharing that they were expecting, former Wizards of Waverly Place star David Henrie and his his wife, Maria Cahill, are officially parents! Henrie, who famously played Selena Gomez's older brother on the beloved Disney series, shared an adorable Instagram photo of the couple's new baby girl, Pia, on Tuesday. He also penned an emotional caption, revealing some of the struggles that he and his wife faced while trying to get pregnant.
The photo Henrie published on social media shows him holding his new daughter and sitting beside Cahill in the hospital. "Today is a particularly special day for Maria and I… and it's special because in order to get to where we are today, with the joy of our newborn in our arms, my wife and I went through trials,” he wrote.
The trials, he explained, included Cahill going through three miscarriages before getting pregnant with Pia.
"I felt compelled to share this because I had no clue just how difficult trying to start a family could be. See, Pia Philomena Francesca Henrie has brothers and sisters, he wrote, adding, "While it was insanely difficult recovering from miscarriage after miscarriage, we knew if we were ever going to be able to hold a baby of our own in our arms that we must not let the tragedy affect our marriage, but rather grow closer together!”
Henrie and Cahill married in 2017, with several Wizards of Wavery Place cast members in attendance-including, of course, Gomez. Henrie also had previously floored Cahill with his proposal, which featured a private helicopter and an island getaway.
In his Instagram post introducing Pia to the world, Henrie also explained how the baby got her middle name. The couple apparently named used "Philomena Francesca" after Pope Frances, following a personal experience they had with the Catholic leader. Henrie included a photo from the day he met Pope Francis and encouraged others to always maintain hope in times of struggle.
Congrats to the new parents! Maybe Selena Gomez will sign up to be Pia's godmother?
